Sample Preparation Guidelines
In the laboratory, we study the thermal behaviour of both inorganic and organic samples in both solid and liquid states.
To ensure maximum measurement accuracy and safety, please adhere to the following guidelines:
Sample Form
- Solids: Submit in the form of powder, small pieces, or pellets.
- Liquids and gels
- Dimensions: The maximum particle diameter must be between 3 and 6 mm (depending on the selected instrument configuration and cup type).
Quantity
- Sample weight: The standard sample quantity for analysis ranges from 1 mg to 100 mg. We recommend consulting us in advance regarding the specific weight based on the selected technique and material type.
Special Requirements and Preparations
- Oversized samples: For certain materials, some of our systems allow samples to be suspended outside of a standard container. However, this requirement must always be discussed with laboratory staff in advance.
Note: The laboratory does not routinely perform additional sample preparation (grinding, crushing, drying). Please submit samples in their final form as intended for measurement.
Required Information for Submitted Samples
When submitting a sample for analysis, it is essential to provide complete information to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment and to ensure that the request is processed correctly.
Required Sample Information
When submitting a request, please specify:
- Chemical composition: Exact or at least estimated composition.
- Safety risks: Information on toxicity, radioactivity, or other risks associated with the sample or its components.
- Storage conditions: Requirements regarding temperature, light sensitivity, and humidity before analysis.
- Contact: Name and contact information for the client for consultation.
- Measurement conditions: temperature range, heating rate, atmosphere...
- The fund number from which the costs will be covered.
- Timeframe (deadline for fulfilling the request)
How to Place an Order
Internal clients: Fill out the Internal Form (PDF) and submit it along with the sample.
External clients: We require an official purchase order.
Disposal of Samples After Analysis
The disposal of sample residues is governed by the following rules:
Return of material after analysis (ash residue): Most analyses are destructive, and the sample is irreversibly degraded after heating. If you nevertheless wish to have the residue returned directly from the analysis crucible (the so-called ash residue), you must specify this request in advance in your order or on an internal form.
Pickup of leftover material: Any unused material remaining after analysis must be picked up within 4 weeks of the results being sent. After this period, the leftover material will be automatically disposed of (in the case of hazardous substances, the client may be charged a disposal fee).
